When valuing fine silver, workmanship, historical importance, and demand for particular styles or makers comes into play. Sterling silver is the historic standard in Great Britain at 925 parts per thousand pure silver. The United States used coin silver at 900 parts. Baltimore operated its own assay office, and had a purity standard of 11/12 or 916 parts. Tiffany was originally a retailer, purchasing from leading New York silversmiths such as William Gale, Gerardus Boyce, William Bogert, John Polhamus, and John C. Moore. In 1851 Tiffany began to use the sterling standard. Tiffany established their own silver workshop in 1868 under the leadership of John C. Moore.

In the current world of virtual appraisals, we can appraise your silver through a series of photos and your description and measurements, and documentation, such as receipts or previous appraisals.
Part of the process will be for you to seach your silver for hallmarks. It’s fun when you find them! Most phones now have magnifiers. You can also purchase a 10-12 power jeweler’s loupe inexpensively online.
Office hours are between 9am‑6pm, Monday through Friday, California time. Alice is a Certified Appraiser. Alice is also IRS Qualified for Estate & Charitable Donation Appraisals.
